The potential for infection, allergic reaction or poisoning can arise from a variety of sources within the work environment, particularly when working near to or standing in stagnant water, e.g.

• Malaria can be transmitted by mosquito bites.
• Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) can be contracted by ingestion or absorption (via cuts or abrasion to the skin) of water contaminated by rodent urine.
• Allergic reaction can result from contact with algal growth or the residue of shellfish. Certain skin conditions can result from prolonged skin contact with oils and other chemicals.
• Avian Flu can be transmitted though contact with contaminated engine parts due to a bird strike.
• Legionnaires’ disease can be contracted by inhalation of mist/spray of untreated & infected water supplies.

Always use the appropriate control measures and PPE to avoid contact with any potential sensitisers, e.g. when water jetting or steam cleaning, avoid inhaling contaminated water particles.
