Slips and Trips

Slips & trips are one of the most common causes of major injuries at work. They occur in almost all workplaces, and major slips can result in broken bones and be the initial causes for a range of other accident types such as falls from height.

Look out for the following hazards and always exercise caution

Look out for the following hazards and always exercise caution:

  • Wet and polished floor surfaces, potholes, raised paving slabs and other fixed trip hazards (raised structures, hatch profile, pipe-work, cable trays, etc.)
  • Spilt oil, fuels, lubrications, powders, etc.

Actions to protect yourself

Actions to protect yourself

  • Do not run; concentrate on where you are going and what you are doing.
  • Do not assume an area is safe without doing the appropriate checks.
  • Do not jump from one structure to another. Move in a controlled manner. Test a structure can hold your weight before standing on it.
  • Report defective or insufficient lighting, damaged walkways and trailing hoses and cables to the host site controller.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for the task and the weather/floor conditions, with a good grip on the sole.
  • If using ladders for access etc, ensure your footwear has a defined heel to prevent your foot slipping through the rungs.
  • If required, wear fall arrest equipment attached to an appropriate anchor point (refer to risk assessment for task).
  • Report all spillages and use spill kits (if trained) to eliminate the hazard. Keep your work area clear of obstructions or report the obstruction to the site controller if not in your control.
