Ionising radiations occurs as either electromagnetic rays (such as X-rays and gamma rays) or particles (such as alpha and beta particles). It occurs naturally (eg radon gas) but can also be produced artificially.

As the use of ionizing radiation increases, so does the potential for health hazards if not properly managed, used or contained. Acute health effects such as skin burns or acute radiation syndrome can occur when doses of radiation exceed certain levels. Low doses of ionizing radiation can increase the risk of longer-term effects such as cancer.

Training in radiation protection is required for all persons working with ionising radiation. This should be provided by the employer before visiting a site where ionising radiation may be a hazard. The site itself should provide further training and instruction on their local arrangements for controlling work with ionising radiation and the requirements to be followed for entering and leaving the specific areas.

Be aware that it may be a requirement to wear a dosemeter (to measure your radiation exposure) and Personal Protective Equipment when entering a radiologically controlled area. Arrangements for dosemeter provision need to be organised before arriving at the site.
