04 / Dealing With Risk

Actions to be Performed

Let us look at a few actions you can perform to ensure safe working alongside other site contractors.

Toolbox Talks

  • Hold or attend regular briefings (daily and/or on change or work/shift).
  • Hold Toolbox Talks involving all personnel working in the area.

Safety Method Statements/Risk Assessments

  • Communicate safety method statements and risk assessments, wherever possible.

Unsafe Acts

  • If you see any unsafe acts or conditions, speak up and address them immediately where it is safe to do so.
  • Report ‘Near Misses’ to site management and your Rolls-Royce Manager.
  • Report any rule breaking to site management.

Competency

  • Ensure competency of contractors for safety critical tasks, e.g. lifting and scaffolding. This can be done by asking to see licenses or checking with the site management/host.
  • Visually inspect any safety critical structures and/or equipment before use.

PTW (Permit to Work)

Working in hazardous areas can involve a number of different risks. In some situations, more advanced risk management is required to control the risks. For example, for certain high-risk activities, a Permit to Work (PTW) may be required to help identify and manage the risks.

If a PTW or equivalent is required, make sure it is in place and all are aware of its scope and limitations.

Changing Situations

Be aware of changing situations/conditions in your area of work. If things change – stop – undertake a dynamic risk assessment to ensure the activities are still safe to continue with.
