Asbestos

Exposure to Asbestos can be fatal. Asbestos should only be handled by trained and specifically licensed persons.

There is a huge legacy of asbestos having been used as insulation lagging and fireproofing material in the shipbuilding, aerospace and the construction industry for many years.

Asbestos materials in good condition are safe unless the fibres become airborne through damage or disturbance. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause serious diseases (typically >15 years after exposure to asbestos), such as:

  • Asbestosis
  • Mesothelioma
  • Asbestos-related lung cancer
  • Diffuse pleural thickening

Protecting Yourself

Stop and ask if you suspect asbestos is present, or if you think the work should be carried out by specialists (licensed contractors). If asbestos is suspected, do not proceed until the area is declared free of asbestos.

Get involved in work with Asbestos

Use methods that create a lot of dust

Sweep up dust and debris – use a vacuum cleaner with a high efficiency filter and wet cloths

Take home overalls if asbestos dust is suspected

Reuse disposable clothing or masks

Smoke

Eat or drink in the work area
